6 Things to Look for When Hiring a Designer

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of running a business is getting to work on your brand’s creative projects (I may be biased, but many founders agree!). On top of that, these creative projects — if executed well — have the ability to be some of the most influential, growth-driving business investments that you ever make.

One of the key aspects of receiving great design work is partnering with the right designer. Trust me, I know — I’ve been on both sides of a creative project, from working as a designer to leading design projects as a creative director and founder. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with amazing designers. I’ve also worked with designers that ended up being the wrong fit for the job. The latter is something that can be costly to your business, your time, your money, and your energy. And that’s something I don’t want to happen to you!

With that said, I’m excited to share my learnings of key things to keep an eye out for in hiring a designer, so you feel empowered and confident in selecting the one that’s right for you.

6 things to look for when hiring a designer:

1. Their portfolio of work aligns with your brand’s creative vision.

This first point may seem obvious, but it’s at the top of my list because it’s essential. When considering a designer for your project, is their style or specialty one that aligns with your brand? If you love their portfolio and feel like any one of their previous projects would be a perfect fit aesthetically for the look you’re wanting to achieve, then chances are they’ll be able to create something you love.

It’s also important to note here that not all designers can do every type of design — if you’re looking for a packaging designer, find someone that specializes in packaging (as opposed to asking your web designer, for example, if they can design your packaging as well). Different design mediums have different intricacies, parameters, and best practices that are important to know as a designer, and it’s in your best interest to hire someone that is fully knowledgable on what you’re looking to create (so you can really tap into their expertise and get the most out of your project).

2. They are a strategic thinker.

While aesthetics are important, hiring a designer that is also strategically-minded ensures that the work they do aligns with your goals. What’s beautiful design, after all, if it isn’t effective?

A key sign that a designer is a strategic thinker is if they have case studies on their website — detailed portfolio pages where they talk through a project from conception to completion, rather than just showing the end result. Strategic designers share the why behind their work, like why they chose a certain color, or font, or layout. Look for these signs of strategic thinking both on your designer’s website, as well as you initial consultation call with them.

3. Their work is rooted in commercial objectives.

Similarly to being a strategic thinker, it’s ideal as a founder to make sure the designer you work with understands commercial objectives and prioritizes them in their work. A solid understanding of what your business is, where you’re aiming to take it, and how you’re wanting to get there through this project will allow them to translate those objectives beautifully in design.

4. They have glowing testimonials from reputable clients.

If a designer proudly shares client testimonials that give glowing reviews, chances are they value who they work with and providing an exceptional experience. As an extra measure, you may ask the designer for a professional reference that you can talk to more in-depth about their experience working with them. This could help ease any outstanding questions or hesitations on moving forward with the designer, especially if you’re making a big investment in this design project.

5. Their fees and availability fit within your budget.

This may go without saying, but the designer that is right for you will fit within your budget and timeline you have set for your project needs. This point really boils down to making sure you know exactly what you need, when you need it by, and how much you’re willing to spend, and searching for a designer that’s suited to those business needs.

6. They are excited about your business and project.

Last, but most definitely not least, look for a designer that is excited about your business and the project at hand. Why? If a designer is truly excited about the opportunity, they should be fully invested in the project and passionate about helping you receive the deliverables you’re hoping for. As a founder, you deserve to work with someone that shares your same vision and excitement for what you’re doing.
